Snoring And Depression – Coincidence Or Causal? By Christian Goodman
My wife and I traveled recently to stay with good friends we hadn’t seen in several years, “Mike” and “Nina.” Over the course of dinner one evening, Nina confided in me that she had been depressed for the last two years.
As treatment doesn’t helped her she shifted to anti depressants. I am not an admirer of medicine as every one will make every choice available. Depression without treatment will bring drastic order.
Inappropriately, anti-depressants did not go well with Nina. Despite effects like obese and tension, she felt restless and tired than ever. In spite of sleeping half a day in the evening she felt tired is the main symptom of psychotic disorder.
Later that same evening, my wife and I awoke to loud snoring – loud enough for us to hear it through two closed doors. Since I wasn’t sleeping anyway, I had time to think about Nina’s condition. Was that Nina snoring next door? If so, couldn’t loud snoring be a symptom of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA)?
We learned the next day that it was, in fact, Nina who was snoring so loudly. In addition to this, her husband told me that it wasn’t her snoring so much as the fact that she would actually stop breathing several times per night for several seconds and then gasp and/or choke for air when she did start to breathe again.
As Nina looked at Mike, I questioned about her noisy breathing and it may be OSA, where the back of the throat stop the way for the air pass through. Based on the extent of the defect, it blocks the organs like lungs from getting the crucial oxygen which helps in the functioning of the organs appropriately.
Nina knew that she occasionally snored when she was sick but had no idea the extent to which she was snoring. Mike confirmed that over the past couple of years the snoring and breathing interruptions had become more severe.
When asked the obvious question as to why he failed to mention this to Nina, he responded that he thought her snoring wasn’t a serious health condition and he was the only one who had been suffering from Nina’s snoring.
Mike could be probably correct. As one gets mild sleep apnea and breathing difficulties frequently, the supply of oxygen to body and brain will lower down and will not be working in order. Obesity, Daytime sleepiness, muscle weakness, annoyances, high blood pressure, lack of concentration will lead to psychiatric disorder.
In critical cases of sleep apnea, the heart will pump faster to match with the shortage of oxygen in the blood and will begin to bulge. Along with that kidney failure, stoppage of blood to brain and heart may happen. It is about eighty and ninety percent of people were found OSA was not diagnosed properly.
If you aren’t sure if you snore, ask your sleeping partner, but don’t rely on his/her diagnosis. He or she may sleep right through it, even if it’s loud. Talk to your doctor about your symptoms. While fatigue is a major symptom of depression, many people are misdiagnosed even when they report no mood swings or feelings of depression.
Doctors suggested that a study analysis by the skilled one will check how often you wake up while sleeping. A few got help with Continuous Process Airway Pressure (CPAP), is an instrument which lets non stop constant air into the breathing passage while sleeping. Others follow breaking down excess weight and by neglecting alcohols and drugs for lessening the symptoms.
Recent research shows that the depression caused by sleep apnea also will be causing indications of OSA. It is found that, about thirty percent of them who had depression also have OSA.
