Hi Jessica:
Please see an ENT (ear, nose, throat) doctor. He can assess your upper respiratory (nose, throat, tonsils, adenoids, etc if you still have them. It sure sounds like your adenoids are overgrown and obstruct your breathing when you lay down….
If you have a family MD, see him. Forget the ER.
You are NOT mentally ill.
You may have a “sleep apnea” situation. But first see the ENT and rule out something simple like I’ve stated above. It is easy enough to have tonsils/adenoids removed.
Also, try those nose strips that help to hold your nostrils apart while you sleep. For some, they help. Do you feel “stuffy” when you lay down to sleep. Sometimes, a MD can order an allergy nasal spray such as Nasonex which is wonderful.
Sleep with your head and shoulders raised about 6 inches
You are indeed having a panic attack of sorts which can be brought on by extreme anxiety and that would account for your fast and hard heart beat. If you were to take your blood pressure, it too would sky rocket.
But pills is all the ER can do for you if their xrays and EKG’s haven’t shown anything.
Your doctor may prescribe a mild sedative for you. But, of course, you can’t take it forever. I still heavily suggest the ENT as soon as possible.
Good luck
I am an RN
